Modifying Detachable Backrest Brackets

Below you will find the instructions for modifying your existing detachable hardware to accommodate the width of your new custom fender.  While this way may be known as "the hard way," it is also the more cost effective way.

Alternatively, Bad Dad's Detachable Backrest Bracket can be installed to eliminate the modifications outlined below.

1.  Before beginning, these two photos illustrate two angles of the factory detachable backrest setup.

2.  Next you will need to move the mounting lugs rearward in order to accommodate the width of the new fender.  You will do this by moving the front mounting point to the factory frame hole immediately behind the OEM mounting hole.  You can see the OEM hole in this picture between the shock head and relocated front mount.

No picture. 3.  Now that you have moved the front mount, you will obviously need to move the rear mount accordingly.  Since there is no factory hole behind the rear mount as there is for the front mount in step 2, the following step (step 4) illustrates how to address this problem.
4.  In order to elongate the rear bracket appropriately for the rear mount, you will need to weld a threaded fastener to allow for installation of the rear mount.  The fastener seen here is currently tacked into place.

Not only does the fastener provide for the correct spacing to allow the backrest's arms to reach over the wide rear fender, the fastener provides the lug with a location to bolt into.

Note:  In the left-hand picture here you can see the mock up spacer on the front mount.  You will be able to make a spacer out of any material you like, from a stack of washers to a custom cut spacer from aluminum.
5.  After you have relocated your lugs and notched your fender's side flange for the shock mount, you will also want to notch for the new mount position immediately behind the shock head.
6.  Finally, you are ready to fit the backrest over the fender.  Due to the width of the fender the backrest will not slide over easily.  You will need to use a little "physical force" to properly tweak the backrest.
7.  Once you have relocated the lugs and tweaked the backrest, everything should fit as pictured below.
